Tailgate Wine Pairings

We don’t know about y’all, but we only watch football for the snacks and drinks. The only way we’re making it through 2+ hours of men running into each other on TV is with delicious food and a yummy glass of wine. That’s right- you don’t have to be a beer drinker in order to enjoy football! Wine pairs perfectly with a variety of game-day snacks, and since Butternut comes in cans you can even take it along to tailgate! (And be sure to check out our post on why canned wine is just the best!)

We’ve come up with a list of some of our favorite fall football food items and paired them with our Butternut Wines for the perfect game day combo that everyone will love, whether you’re watching for the outcome of the game or just because you love any excuse to get together with friends. No matter how your team performs, you’re guaranteed to think these pairings are a win!

It can be difficult to find the perfect recipes to pair with chardonnay; our chardonnay has a delicious creamy texture, but like most chardonnays it can easily be overpowered by a super pungent food. You’ll want to avoid any food pairings that are very spicy or acidic. Chardonnay pairs great with fish, subtly-seasoned meat, creamy pastas and meat and vegetables that have been caramelized. We believe the following snacks will compliment the rich yet mild taste of the wine in order to bring out the best flavors in both food and wine:

  • Sweet potato fries with dill greek yogurt dipping sauce
  • Hummus and pita chips
  • Creamy shrimp dip
  • Flatbread pizza with apples and balsamic onions
  • Chicken and veggie skewers OR grilled shrimp skewers
  • Brie cheese with crackers and a jam compote

Rosé is an incredibly versatile wine; it goes great with brunch, lunch, happy hour, dinner, and of course- football! It also pairs well with a variety of different types of food, from Mediterranean to BBQ to dessert. You can’t really go wrong with a nice cold glass of rosé, but try pairing it with any of these yummy appetizers for a guaranteed touch down with your guests:

  • Greek chicken skewers with tzatziki
  • Spicy fries with garlic aioli
  • Grilled oysters
  • Edamame
  • Bacon-wrapped asparagus
  • Mini pizzas
  • Crostinis with baked brie and prosciutto
  • Mini quiche

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet is a much richer wine than chardonnay or rosé, and ours has a deep flavor reminiscent of red berries and dark chocolate- perfect for a crisp, fall day! Because it’s a more hearty wine, its appetizer pairings will need to be more substantial as well. Some of these recipes may work better as tapas as opposed to hors d’oeuvres, but that just means you won’t need to make dinner!

  • Portobello and goat cheese tarts
  • Meatballs (turkey or beef)
  • A charcuterie board with pungent cheeses like asiago and Parmigiano-Reggiano along with prosciutto ham and salami (some dried fruit and nuts would be good, too!)
  • Bruschetta
  • Stuffed mushrooms
  • Lamb lollipops

Pinot Noir

Our pinot noir has aromas of vanilla and menthol combined with notes of red and dark berries for a medium-bodied, silky finish. It pairs great with grilled salmon, roast chicken and veggies or hearty beef stew. Like rosé, pinot noir is a versatile wine and can be paired with a variety of food choices. There’s a reason pinot noir is called the white wine drinker’s red wine! This yummy red appeals to all wine-lovers, red and white alike! Try pairing it with some of these apps on game day!

  • Bacon stuffed mushrooms
  • Wild mushroom and burrata bruschetta
  • Veggie tarts
  • Pork lettuce cups
  • Smoked salmon crostinis
  • Mild cheeses like brie, gruyere, and goat cheese (add some figs, salami, walnuts, chocolate and dried fruit for a yummy charcuterie board)
  • Chocolate-covered strawberries for a fun twist!
