Party in style for the Kentucky Derby

Nothing says “summer is just around the corner” like the arrival of the Kentucky Derby. Held annually on the first Saturday in May, it’s a day we look forward to all year long. 20 three-year-old thoroughbred horses compete for the grand prize of 3 million dollars, a solid gold trophy, and garland covered in 400 fresh roses. Lucky for you, you don’t have to make a trip to Louisville to experience Derby Days. Plan your own Kentucky Derby Party, with our help, in the comfort of your own home.

The Decor

The Kentucky Derby is also known as “The Run for the Roses” so you’ll want to incorporate roses in to your party decor. Simply pick up a dozen long stem roses to pop in a vase or take it a step further and assemble your own rose-clad centerpieces. Either way your home is sure to smell divine and your guests will totally be impressed!

The Dress Code

Ladies, it’s all about the hat. Part Southern-tradition, part spectacle… it simply wouldn’t be a Derby Party without a best-in-hat contest. Have your guests cast their votes on a piece of paper and after the race tally the names. The lady with the most votes wins a bottle of Butternut Wine.

Gentlemen, don’t forget your bow ties! Nearly as important as the hats, you just can’t show up at a Kentucky Derby party without one. Have fun with it; the brighter, louder, and preppier- the better! Have your guests cast their votes on a piece of paper for the best-in-bow tie contest and after the race count the votes. The gentleman with the most votes wins a bottle of Butternut Wine.

The Food + Drinks

For food, think classic Southern dishes made simple. Try Baby Hot Browns (a miniature version of the famous Kentucky Hot Brown sandwich,) cheesy jalapeño grits, chicken sliders, pimento cheese dip, bourbon meatballs, and mint julep pops for dessert!

As for the drinks, in addition to Butternut Wine, of course, have one specialty cocktail premixed for your guests. We like Pineapple Mint Julep Sangria because it’s easy to make in large batches and only tastes better as the night goes on.
